Originally named Brentford Road, the station was renamed Gunnersbury in 1871.

On 8 December 1954, a tornado struck the station, injuring six people and ripping off the roof. Exactly 52 years later (minus one day) another tornado hit London, resulting in damage in the Kensal Rise area.
