Balham 114 / 270

In World War II Balham tube station was used by the public as a place to take cover during bombing raids. On 14 October 1940, a bomb landed directly above the station, bursting water and gas mains and killing 64 people. This event features in Atonement, the 2001 novel by Ian McEwan.

The Bedford – a live music and comedy pub venue nearby – has featured performers such as Eddie Izzard, Jo Brand and Al Murray.
