Clapham Common 112 / 270

Clapham Common Tube station has a deep-level air-raid shelter underneath it, with the entrance situated on Clapham High Street.

Clapham Common is a lively and popular park with pub and café, annual fireworks displays, open-air cinemas, concerts and festivals, including the annual Colourscape Festival in September, combining visual art with contemporary music.

Nearby is 575 Wandsworth Road, whose striking hand-carved interiors were created by Khadambi Asalache, a Kenyan-born poet, novelist, philosopher of mathematics and civil servant, who turned his home into a work of art.

The Battersea Arts Centre, one of London’s premier fringe venues presenting physical and experimental theatre, is housed within a grade II-listed building on Lavender Hill, Battersea.

Look out for the narrow island platform. Be careful, but enjoy.
