Chigwell station opened on 1 May 1903. From 2006 the ticket office was replaced by self-service machines.
Chigwell, Essex, is the location of Mark Wallinger’s family home, just a few hundred metres away from the Central line tracks. The Tube provided the artist with the opportunity to travel from the relatively green countryside of Chigwell to the metropolis of London. His Labyrinth artworks reflect his early use of the Tube.
Other notable residents of Chigwell, past and present, include comedian Alan Davies, footballer and captain of the 1966 winning World Cup team Bobby Moore, and businessman Lord Alan Sugar.
