At the station there is a memorial plaque by Richard Kindersley commemorating the Thames Ironworks Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, which once stood near to this site, but closed in 1912. The company built ships for the Royal Navy, including HMS Warrior.

The ironworks had its own football club, known as ‘The Hammers’ or ‘The Irons’ until it changed its name to West Ham United in 1900.
