The station originally opened on 22 August 1856 and has been part of the London Underground since 1947.
Woodford has connections with major cultural figures including William Morris, founder of the Arts and Crafts Movement, who lived in Woodford for a time, author James Hilton, who wrote the novels Goodbye Mr Chips and Lost Horizon, and Sylvia Pankhurst, one of the leading Suffragettes.
