White City Tube station replaced the earlier Wood Lane station and opened on 23 November 1947. The station won an award in 1951 during the Festival of Britain.
The UK’s first Olympic stadium, modestly named ‘The Great Stadium’, was built in West City in 1908 in order to facilitate the 1908 Summer Olympics.
Pete Townsend of the Who created a solo album titled White City: A novel, a series of tales set in a low-income housing estate in West London. The Pogues also released a song called ‘White City’.
