Whitechapel Station was opened by East London Railway in 1876, named after the neighbourhood, which was soon to become notorious as the site of the Jack the Ripper murders.

Royal London Hospital is immediately over the road, and the Blind Beggar public house, where local gangster Ronnie Kray shot George Cornell in 1966, is also in the area.

A five-minute walk down the high street from the Tube is Whitechapel Gallery, hosting contemporary art shows and retrospective exhibitions from some of Britain’s most renowned artists.
