Southfields’ name derives from the field in which farm produce was sold in the local area. It is situated on the Putney Bridge to Wimbledon stretch of the District line, the last section of the Tube to be electrified.

 It is also the shortest walking distance away from the All-England Club, the venue of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships. In 2010, 23 tonnes of fresh strawberries and 7,000 litres of cream were served during the Championships. Each year the station undergoes a makeover at the time of the tournament; in 2006, for example, all of the station’s benches and flooring were painted red due to sponsorship by American Express.
