The station originally opened in 1863 as Gower Street and changed to its present name in 1909.

In 2006 a new entrance opened in a corner of the new headquarters of the Wellcome Trust, which replaced the old entrance.

Near to the station is The Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology and the British Library.
