Lancaster Gate refers to an entrance to Hyde Park named in honour of Queen Victoria, Duke of Lancaster.
The original station, designed by Harry Bell Measures, opened in 1900, as a part of the Central London Railway (now the Central Line). The ground-level building was demolished in 1968. In 2006, the station closed for five months as a result of the lift and station refurbishment.
