“The dramatic architecture of London Underground was the principal inspiration behind my work. In particular I quote from the interior architecture of the early Metropolitan Railway, such as the wonderful statuary and Piranesistyle stonework at Baker Street. Decorative details that are found within the oldest parts of the Tube are put instead on the outside of a building. My structure is a triumphal arch in honour of the Tube’s anniversary, so the design harks back to the optimism of the grand 19th-century engineering projects, as well as the gloom of the high Victorian era.”
