“A fascinating map of the original Metropolitan Underground Railway shows its route from Paddington to Farringdon in 1863. Since no other Underground lines existed at the time, the image is striking in its simplicity – at odds with the sprawling complexity of today’s Tube network. Indeed, the map’s only other features are central London lakes and rivers. My work revisits this map: the railway line delineated against the Serpentine or Thames. Like a surrealist painting of an emerging subterranean world, it’s a view of London that’s startlingly alien yet oddly familiar”
