Blackhorse Road | 24 hand screen-printed tiles designed by Design Work Leisure

Giles Round

Edition of 15

To mark the occasion of new permanent artworks at Blackhorse Road, Victoria and Vauxhall Underground stations, Design Work Leisure (DWL) has created three special editions.

Produced at Craven Dunnill Jackfield in Telford, the heart of ceramic production in Industrial Revolution Britain, each tile has been screen-printed by hand. The 150 x 150mm tiles are suitable for interior domestic application and are accompanied by a guide illustrating possible layouts for assembling the tiles in your home.

The different designs based on the Blackhorse Road, Victoria and Vauxhall artworks, are each available as an edition of 15. Every set contains 24 tiles bespoke to the permanent works and comes with a stamped certificate and special instruction booklet.

Design Work Leisure (DWL) is a design office established by artist Giles Round in 2015 as part of Underline a series of art commissions for the Victoria line. DWL revisits the values and vision of Arts & Crafts exponent William Morris who believed that great art should be for everybody. The project also celebrates the legacy of Frank Pick, managing director of London Underground in the early 20th century who commissioned much of London Underground’s iconic design including the Johnston typeface and Harry Beck’s Tube map.

DWL’s designs utilise historical models of production, working with London Underground tile manufacturers Craven Dunnill Jackfield and in doing so the project provides a critical lens to examine contemporary aesthetics and the hierarchies between applied and fine arts.
