The Stratford Gaff at Gloucester Road

Matt Stokes

Jul 2011 - May 2012

Part of the following series:

Gloucester Road Commission

Gloucester Road Tube station is the flagship site in the Art on the Underground programme. It is an exhibition space that presents a significant challenge to artists working there. Art on the Underground choose high profile artists with a considerable international reputation to work here, with a view to commissioning world-class artworks for London Underground’s customers.

This installation at Gloucester Road contained a selection of large scale photographs by photographer Nadia Bettega, part of Matt Stokes’ 2010-11 commission for Stratford Underground station, The Stratford Gaff: A Serio-Comick-Bombastick-Operatick Interlude. Matt Stokes’ work for Stratford Underground station responded to the Stratford area, its history and the people who live and work there. Stokes brought together a diverse group of local performers to create a spectacular film installation at the station.
