This exhibition presented two contemporary
art projects commissioned by Art on the
Underground to mark the historic 150th
anniversary of London Underground in 2013.
Art is central to the Tube’s history and identity.
For more than a century, London Underground
has commissioned leading architects, designers
and artists to produce its stations, logo, posters
and artworks.
Art on the Underground continues
this tradition by delivering a programme of
contemporary art for the unique environment
and audience of the Tube, often described as
the largest art gallery in the world. Through a
combination of temporary and permanent
commissions, the programme enhances millions
of Tube journeys every day and reflects the
diversity and international importance of London
as a cultural city. Transport for London’s Art on
the Underground is one of the ways through
which the Greater London Authority champions
high-quality public art and design.
For this landmark year for London, Art on
the Underground has contributed two major
projects: 15 for 150, a project to commission
a new artwork from 15 international artists
resulting in posters and limited-edition prints,
and Labyrinth, a major new permanent artwork
for all 270 Tube stations by Mark Wallinger,
one of the UK’s leading contemporary artists.
