Brixton Schools Mural Design Project

Meera Chauda

17 September - 4 November 2018

From 2018-20 Art on the Underground has commissioned contemporary artists to create new artworks in response to the Brixton murals. These works explore commemoration, collective memory and the wider history of mural making, and will be on display at the Brixton Underground station entrance.

As part of this programme Art on the Underground has worked with artist Meera Chauda and six local primary schools to create artworks inspired by the Brixton murals. Each school has designed their own artwork, using drawing and collage, in response to the themes in the original murals. The schools visited specific murals which influenced them to think about what they wanted to celebrate and commemorate about their local area. The designs on display show the pupils’ responses, they are created from tessellated shapes, reminiscent of the London Underground tiles, which reflect each school’s symbol and colours.

The schools work featured in the display at Brixton Library are as follows with information about which mural(s) each school visited along with the related theme for their mural design:

  • Corpus Christi Catholic School (Year 3) visited the Bellefields Road Beach and Brixton Murals, working on the theme What is missing in Brixton?
  • Sudbourne Primary School (Year 5) focused on the Nuclear Dawn Mural, thinking about their hopes for the future of Brixton.
  • St Helen’s Catholic Primary School (Year 4) looked at the Children at Play Mural, reflecting on local people, family and friends.
  • Iqra VA Primary School (Year 2) visited the Brixton Windmill Mural, after seeing the real Windmill, thinking about the local area in the past, present and future.
  • Kings Avenue Primary School (Year 4) focused on the Big Splash Mural, reflecting on fact and fiction, real and imaginary places in Brixton.
  • Loughborough Primary School (Year 3) looked at the Brixton Station Clutter and Food Murals working on the theme Brixton market serving the community.

Meera Chauda is a visual artist living and working in London who uses collage, drawing, photography, and text. Her practice develops from constructing playful yet complex narratives, which belong to many different histories. Her images map and consider the confusion of home, identity, heritage, legacy, and place.

Please join us for a free family drop-in event inspired by this display; the event held at Brixton Library will be led by artist Meera Chauda on Wednesday 24 October, 2.30 – 4.30pm. All ages welcome.
