Gayle Chong Kwan

Gayle Chong Kwan was born in 1973. A British artist who lives and works in London, she makes work that is often specific to a context and explores histories, memory and the senses. She involves other people in her work to consider rituals of exchange and trade. The personal and global politics of food and tourism have been a major focus of Chong Kwan’s work to date.

She has shown extensively in the UK and abroad. In 2005 she received a Pepinières Europeenes Pour Jeunes Artistes Award and an Arts Council England Award. Recent residencies and exhibitions include: Conversations, Tate Britain, London; Different Worlds, National Portrait Gallery, London; UNIDEE at Fondazione Pistoletto, Italy; Chinese Arts Centre, Manchester; Opera North, Leeds; Great Eastern Hotel, London; Macroproyecto de Moravia, Colombia, and Venice Printmaking, Italy. Forthcoming exhibitions / events include: solo exhibition, MAC, Birmingham; COAST Residency, A Foundation, Liverpool; Adventure Ecology, London; an exhibition at the European Forum Emerging Creation, Neumünster Abbey, Luxembourg; and a year-long project with Fondazione Pistoletto, Italy.

Gayle Chong Kwan has previously worked with Platform for Art through Cockaigne, an exhibition of her photographs at Southwark Underground (November 2006 – April 2007), inspired by utopian legends and developments in global tourism.
