Cindy Sherman

London Underground in Collaboration with Serpentine Gallery
3 June 2003 – 8 September 2003

Part of the following series:

Gloucester Road Commission

At Gloucester Road station in June, Art on the Underground are proud to present 10 large-scale photographs by internationally renowned artist, Cindy Sherman, in a joint commission by London Underground and the Serpentine Gallery.

This is Sherman’s first billboard project, timed to coincide with an exhibition of her work at the Serpentine Gallery (3 June – 25 August, Kensington Gardens, London W2, Tel 020 7298 1515). The Billboard Commission is the first collaboration between London Underground and the Serpentine Gallery.

The images are specially produced versions of works made between 1983 and 2000. Sherman has been taking photographs of herself since the mid-1970s, combining the roles of director, photographer and leading actress to create provocative and intriguing images. Adopting an array of roles and disguises, she explores and exposes well-defined images and stereotypes of women in Western society and throughout history.

This collaboration, marking the new season of events and initiatives within London Underground’s Platform for Art programme, reflects a key objective to make links with galleries and other cultural institutions.
