The station was opened in 1887 by the Metropolitan Railway.

Near to the station is the Aquadrome – a Green Flag 100 acre Local Nature Reserve with lakes, grassland and woodland.

Rickmansworth Cricket Club was founded in 1781 and is one of the oldest recorded clubs in England.

Scenes for several films and TV shows have been filmed in the local area such as Black Beauty, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Midsomer Murders, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, Metro-land and Doctor Who.
