The station was opened by the Great Eastern Railway in 1903. Its ticket office was reconstructed in 1948 following destruction of the original building by a German V1 ‘Doodlebug’ in July 1944.

Grange Hill is one of two Tube stations that serves the town of Chigwell, which Charles Dickens described as “the greatest place in the world … Such a delicious old inn opposite the church … such beautiful forest scenery … such an out of the way rural place!”

Nowadays days, Tottenham Hotspur Football Club has its training facilities in the area.
